Jamaica: Rusal announces alumina refinery modernisation programme
UC Rusal’s Alpart and Windalco alumina refineries in Jamaica, which are currently being idled, will soon be up and running following a modernisation programme that will include a shift from coal to gas as the main energy source for steam production.

China: ETT resumes coal delivieres to Chalco – but still wants to renegotiate the contract
Reuters reports that the Mongolian Tavan Tolgoi coal mine, which is just under 200 miles from the Chinese border, intends to resume supplies of coal to the Aluminium Corporation of China (Chalco) having initiated a cost-cutting programme that has reduced the mine's losses.

USA: Century to close Hawesville in August – unless it can strike a better power deal
The closure of Century’s Hawesville, Kentucky, USA, smelter drew a step closer this week when the company gave its employees notice that the plant would be shutdown in August – unless it could negotiate a better power contract with Big Rivers Electric Corporation.
