China: Earnings of metal companies remain weak
China’s 8,403 ‘above-scale’ non-ferrous metal companies have together earned RMB29.4 billion in Q1 2013. Profits improved by 4.8% in the first two months of the year, but price falls and slack demand has seen volumes decline by 2.6% on the same period last year, according to NBS.

India: Vedanta to re-open Lanjigarh refinery this month
Vedanta Aluminium, a leading Indian primary producer, plans to re-open its Lanjigarh alumina refinery in the state of Odisha. The plant, which closed in early December 2012 due to a severe shortage of bauxite, has a capacity of 1Mt/yr.

Norsk Hydro of Norway and Kobe Steel of Japan are joining forces to exchange technical information on aluminium coils and sheet for the automotive industry. In essence, they are both 'expanding their business options in a more globalised procurement policy'.
