Vedanta Aluminium wants to make Odisha, India the capital of aluminium manufacturing.
The Indian producer reaffirmed its commitment to the state this week by advancing a INR 1.8 lakh crore ($19.4 billion) greenfield project in Odisha’s Dhenkanal and Rayagada districts.
Vedanta plans to create an integrated aluminium manufacturing ecosystem in the region.
The project includes a 3 MTPA aluminium smelter, a 4,900 MW power plant, a 6 MTPA alumina refinery, and a downstream aluminium park.
The proposed development is expected to create up to 50,000 jobs in its initial phase and 200,000 employment opportunities over time.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said: “Aluminium is a critical metal for India’s future, with demand projected to rise nearly sixfold by FY2047.
"Odisha, with the country’s largest bauxite reserves, is naturally poised to anchor this growth.
"Our upcoming investments are transformative in strengthening India’s aluminium self-reliance, creating large-scale employment, energising local enterprises, and building a future-ready industrial ecosystem.
"We appreciate the proactive support of the Government of Odisha, and reaffirm our commitment to making Odisha the aluminium capital of the world.”
Vedanta’s Odisha operations include aluminium, power, iron ore, and related businesses, contribute over ₹9,000 crore annually to the exchequer and account for approximately 3% of the state’s GSDP.
