After a fire occurred at Novelis’ Oswego plant on 16 September, a second smaller fire occurred 10 October.
Damage from the first fire was localised to the hot mill area, but other production centres were temporarily impacted due to various reasons, mainly water.
The second fire occurred during roof repair work at the plant but was quickly extinguished. The incident was minor and Novelis reports that it will not affect the recovery timing for its hot mill operations, which is expected in early Q1 2026.
The Oswego location is Novelis’ first US operation and stands today as the company’s largest, wholly owned fabrication facility in North America.
Equipped for aluminium scrap remelting, recycling, ingot casting, hot and cold rolling and finishing, the plant employs approximately 1,100 people.
Fortunately, no injuries resulted from the initial fire or the 10 October fire.
Novelis is co-ordinating with plants worldwide to source material and minimise customer interruptions as much as possible. The cause of the first fire is still being investigated.
The cold mill and finishing areas are back online and operational, while power is being restored to the remelt and recycle area, which is expected to restart soon.
