Up to 319 jobs cold be lost if the firm decides to close the plant in 2011. The company said the proposal is subject to consultation with its employees at Bridgnorth.
The firm is blaming competition from other countries, over capacity in the foil market and also said its Bridgnorth plant was at a technical disadvantage compared to its others in Europe.
A spokesman said if the plant shut the firm would work to minimise the impact and provide support to colleagues.
Tadeu Nardocci, president of Novelis Europe said: “Today's proposal is primarily to address European market and structural conditions, not because of any performance issues at Bridgnorth.”
