Nalco had planned an INR170bn ($3.7bn) 500kt/y smelter and 1250MW power plant in South Africa. But these were abandoned as the company has found that there is not sufficient coal in the offered reserves to feed the ventures.
The INR100bn ($2.1bn) Iranian project, which involved setting up a 330kt/y aluminium smelter and an 800MW power station, was put on hold after the company struggled to obtain funds for the project.
