Luoyang Phase 1 to start

Luoyang Longding Aluminium has put into production phase-1 of its 600kt/y sheet, strip and foil project. Located in Yichuan, Henan Province, the project is co-funded by Jiangsu Dingsheng Aluminium Co and Luoyang Longhai Investment Co.

Phase-1 has a designed capacity of 250kt/y and is expected to reach full capacity in October this year. Total investment in the project is RMB4.2bn ($650M).

Sapa Profiles’ review

Sapa Profiles’ has informed its employees in Belgium, The Netherlands and Portugal of its intention to consolidate the capacity in those countries.

It has started a consultation process with employee representatives. It said the restructuring proposal intends to ensure the long term competitiveness of Sapa Profiles, with a strategic focus on high value products for its customers.

Aleris aerospace deal

Aleris has signed a five-year contract to provide aluminium plate and sheet in several alloys to Airbus. The agreement covers supply between 2012 to 2016, and also includes the development of a recycling programme, where Aleris will recycle scrap for Airbus.

Product will be manufactured by Aleris at its Koblenz, Germany and its Duffel, Belgium sites.

Aleris also will supply plate to Airbus from its new $300M plate mill in China when construction of that plant is completed in late 2012.

US can recycling at high

The US recycling rate for aluminium beverage cans has reached its highest level in a decade, with 58.1% of all cans recycled last year - a rate that is more than double that of any other beverage container, the Aluminum Association, Can Manufacturers Institute and Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries said.
