Death at LogNor site

A subcontractor working at Hydro’s LogNor facility near Soissons, France died from an electric shock during installation work at the new logistics and surface treatment plant for Wicona, a brand within Hydro’s building systems operations.

The subcontractor was employed by a Polish firm performing work at the near-completed LogNor facility on behalf of Wurster Oberflächentechnik, a German painting and powder coating specialist. Police launched an investigation.

Hydro will conduct a separate investigation of the incident in cooperation with Wurster and relevant authorities.

Chalco rolling project

A 150kt/y aluminium rolling project has broken ground in Guizhou, China.

The project, a joint venture involving Chalco, Guiyang Ind-ustrial Investment Corp and Shanghai Enyuan Industry Co, is designed to produce sheet, strip and foils. Chalco has a 40% stake in the project.

US production

Based on Aluminum Association surveys, US primary aluminum production was 1.727.258t in 2010, a rise of 91t from the 2009 total.

For December 2010, the annual rate of production was 1.761.667Mt, up 7.1% from the December 2009 annual rate. Compared to the previous month, the annual rate of production rose two-tenth of 1% over the November 2010 total. Actual production for the month of December 2010 was 149.621kt.

Aleris sells Brazil operations

Aleris International has completed the sale of its operations in Brazil to MCN Empreendimentos e Participacoes Ltda. The transaction includes assets associated with 11 scrap collection centres in Brazil and two melting sites in Pindamonhangaba, Brazil.
