Average output up

World daily primary aluminium output averaged 68.5kt/day in November, up from 677kt/day in October and from 63.6kt/day in November 2009, according to the International Aluminium Institute. Total production in November was 2.054Mt, down from 2.1Mt in October (31 days) but up from 1.909Mt in November 2009.

For the entire January-November period, daily average aluminium production was 66.4kt/day, up from 64.100-kt/day in January-November 2009. Total production for the January-November period was 22.163Mt, up from 21.414Mt a year earlier. These figures exclude China which produced 14.93Mt in Jan-Nov despite curtailment of electricity supplies recently.

Alumina project

Yunnan Aluminium Company is expected to complete construction soon of its 800kt/y alumina project in Wenshan, Yunnan Province, China. The project, wh-ich started construction in 2008, is scheduled to start trial production in the first half of 2011. Yunnan Al expects the refinery to run at full capacity within two years after commissioning.

Sheet and strip project

China’s largest aluminium sheet and strip project, built by Asia Aluminium Group with a designed capacity of 400kt/y, is set to go into production.

Located in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province, the project will produce flat products used in the aerospace, military and rail industries. It is expected to reach full capacity within three years.

Sierra Leone bauxite plan

Vimetco has begun operation of its bauxite mines in Sierra Leone without the support of a contractor. The estimated bauxite output of 1.4Mt/y will go to its alumina refinery in Romania.
