A steam power generation turbine at Jamalco alumina refinery, Jamaica is on track for completion this year.
The turbine will enable Jamalco to be fully self sufficient in its power generation and lower its cost structure by reducing third-party power purchases, said its owner Century Aluminum.
Work is on track to be competed by the end of this year, with cost savings as a result of the project set to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
Century Aluminum said output in quarter one this year at the refinery was its highest since it took full ownership of the site in May 2023.
Century’s CEO Jesse Gary said in the company’s quarterly financial report released on May 8 that approximately $16 million was being invested in the facility, the majority of which was on the steam turbine.
The operation is currently operating at 1.2 million tonnes a year but the investment is expected to boost production to its nameplate capacity of 1.4 million tonnes a year.
He said: “We continue to think that's going to be a really good asset for us, and it's just a matter of time and executing on our Capex programmes to get where we want to be.”
