Vedanta's Odisha alumina refinery has been operating at 70% capacity because it can't source it's daily bauxite requirement of 10kt.

The company claims that some state governments are limiting the issue of bauxite mining leases and that such a practice cannot be justified as in the national interest.

According to Vedanta, the federal government should open new mines in eastern Odisha state where the country's largest bauxite reserves can be found.

Limiting the amount of bauxite mining leases, it is claimed, is due to local protests over land acquisition.
