Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), has announced the start-up of the second phase of its expansion to Al Taweelah smelter in Abu Dhabi.

The second phase will see new reduction cells added to EGA smelter.

The expansion to the Al Taweelah Potline 1 began production in April 2021. The expansion includes the addition of 26 new reduction cells to Potline 2, increasing the production capacity by over 30,000 tonnes of hot metal per year. EGA is also adding additional collection of reduction cells to each of the three potlines at Al Taweelah. The expansion to Potline 3 is expected to start production later this year. The potlines are some of the most carbon efficient on the market.

The total expansion of 66 reduction cells will increase EGA’s capacity by up to 78,000 tons of hot metal per year. Despite COVID-19, the work has progressed ahead of schedule with the full project now some 80 per cent complete.

Employing around 950 people on the smelter expansion project, over 2.7 million hours of work has been completed without injury.

EGA Chief Executive Officer, Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, said:

“We have been working throughout COVID-19 on this expansion to Al Taweelah smelter, which is now starting production as the world increasingly needs aluminium to build back better. As always, our first priority is the safety of each person working on this project and I congratulate the team on their safety performance. We look forward to the start-up of the remaining reduction cells later this year.”
