In a recent earnings call, Century Aluminum stated it is “making progress” on a strategy evaluation of its Hawesville smelter.
The aluminium facility, located in Kentucky, is the company’s largest in the US, but has been idle since July 2022 due to increasing energy prices.
President and CEO of Century Aluminum, Jesse Gary, said: “We are now in final negotiations.”
They continued: “We expect that we'll finish the entire strategic review process, which includes both those negotiations and also our analysis over the next quarter. [We will] be able to really make a decision on go forward for Hawesville at that time.”
When active, the facility has a primary aluminium capacity of 250,000mt per year - the largest aluminium producer of high purity aluminium in North America.
Gary concluded by stating: “We continue to have positive engagement, and those negotiations are moving forward well.”
