A Richards Consulting (ARC) has been awarded a contract to upgrade Hulamin’s S4 aluminium cold rolling mill in South Africa.

This follows the successful widening of the S5 mill by the London-based specialist consulting and engineering group, at the end of the second quarter of 2025.

In a statement, ARC said: “We are thrilled and very proud to be continuing and strengthening our relationship as a supplier of engineering services, equipment and project management to Hulamin.

“The engineering and a full set of manufacturing drawings ready was completed by the end of April 2025, all set for the next phase of manufacturing and installation to suit Hulamin’s busy project schedule over the coming months.”

The mill upgrades will include a new:

  • Spray system
  • Entry and exit thickness gauges
  • Entry and exit laser speed measurement units
  • Enhanced ARC strip dryness system

It is hoped these upgrades will improve strip quality and mill performance, as well as allow the S4 mill to produce the same product currently being handled by mills S5 and S6.

ARC has specially designed the upgrades to minimise the loss of production and disruption to the plant during the project.

Hulamin is the largest aluminium rolling operation in sub-Saharan Africa and is also one of the largest exporters.

The startup of the mill is planned for the second quarter of 2026.
