The Aluminium Federation (ALFED), has labelled the government’s Vision 2035: Critical Minerals Strategy as ‘pivotal’.

The strategy formally acknowledges aluminium as both a critical and strategic growth material for the UK economy, for the first time.

In a LinkedIn post, ALFED CEO, Nadine Bloxsome, stated: “This recognition reflects much of what ALFED and our members have been working towards through the UK Aluminium Alliance, our policy engagement with HM Treasury and DBT, and our work to map UK aluminium capability, scrap flows and investment needs.”

The strategy commits to increasing the proportion of critical materials sourced within the UK, both through new supply and recycling.

It also signals investment and policy support for mid-stream processing, recycling and advanced manufacturing.

Despite the advancement, ALFED believes there is still more to do.

Bloxsome added: “Recognition is welcome, but progress now depends on delivery. The challenge ahead is to ensure this strategy translates into practical support, clear investment signals and long-term competitiveness for UK aluminium.

“ALFED will continue to work closely with Government and industry to make sure this happens.”
