Vimetco’s Henan Zhongfu Industry’s R&D department decreased DC (direct current) consumption to 11,819kWh/t of aluminium, down by 10.7% from 13,235kWh/t.
It carried out the research in its ‘low-temperature low-voltage aluminum smelting technology’ project.
The project was co-financed by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the PRC and passed the exam and appraisal of an expert team organized by the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association (CNIA).
Chen Quanxun, the President of CNIA, said the technology was a breakthrough for the Chinese aluminium smelting industry. The CNIA will encourage the industry to adopt the technology to maintain sustainable development.
Jia Mingxing, Vice President of the CNIA, said the power consumption of an aluminium smelter will decrease by 1000kWh/t Al if it uses the technology. It will save energy and reduce emissions, he added.
