The Indian government has rejected Vedanta Aluminium’s plan to expand its Lanjigarh refinery, the Times of India reported.

The ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) said Vedanta Aluminium (VAL) had started the expansion project illegally without getting an environment clearance.

It said: “VAL stated that they had started the project work in May 2009, after conducting a public hearing in the area in April 2009, but the records of the ministry show that expansion work was initiated in the area in November 2008 itself," the ministry said.

VAL wanted to expand the alumina refinery capacity and captive power plant from 1 to 6Mt/y and from 75 to 300MW.
