The figure was published at the first Aluminium Can Recycling initiative in Romania (ALUCRO) seminar. It was disclosed that collected cans are baled and transported for recycling to the main aluminium cansheet producers in Europe.

Alucro started in early 2009 with school campaigns in the holiday resort of Busteni in the Carpathian mountains and in Bucharest’s District no. 4. It worked with teachers and schoolchildren to collect the cans.

It is a not for profit association founded by the European Aluminium Association, AMEP American Packaging and the Polish Can-Pack group, a manufacturer of aluminium beverage cans for the Romanian market.

Alucro’s aim is to stimulate the collection and recycling of aluminium beverage cans in Romania.

The average recycling rate of aluminium beverage cans in western Europe was 62% in 2007 accounting for nearly 2Mt of CO2 reduction.
