The smelter relies upon AP60 potline technology, developed in France, which the company claims is cleanest aluminium production technology in the world. There are currently 7,500 AP series cells in operation around the world, representing some 6Mt of installed capacity.

Rio Tinto Alcan claims that AP60 technology not only has the highest installed global capacity, but also the lowest GHG emissions, lowest energy consumption, lowest full economic cost and the highest productivity.

At Arvida, metal output per pot is expected to be 40% higher than at existing smelters. There are 38 pots with an expected annual production capacity of 60kt.
