Outotec has agreed with Indonesian metals company PT Antam to carry out a feasibility study for the first smelter-grade alumina refinery to be built in Indonesia.

Indonesia is the sixth-largest bauxite producing country in the world. So far its domestic bauxite has not been refined to alumina. Instead, alumina is imported from Australia to its aluminium smelter located in North Sumatra.

Antam plans to build the first smelter grade alumina refinery in Indonesia and use its bauxite deposits to develop an integrated value chain for domestic aluminium production.

Outotec will conduct the feasibility study and will include mineralogical investigations, laboratory-scale hydrometallurgical tests and basic engineering of the alumina refinery.
