Two French glass manufacturers have secured government funding of €28 million to help reduce carbon emissions in the production process.

O-I’s Vayres site and International Cookware’s Chateauroux facility are among 15 beneficiaries of the French Government's €28 million funding who will be receiving funds as part of its France Relance project.

It is part of the governments Energy Efficiency and Decarbonisation scheme which aims to cut industrial greenhouse gas emissions by 17% on average at the 15 sites, which represents a total of more than 68,600 tonnes of CO2eq per year.

The project at O-I Vayres container glass manufacturing site involves the elimination of fuel oil consumption from the site's furnaces and recovery of waste heat from the furnaces.

The glass bottle manufacturer uses a mixture of fuel oil and gas to supply its production furnaces.

The project consists of switching to 100% gas ovens, and recovering the fatal energy from the ovens to produce part of the site's heat and electricity, as well as to replace the boiler with more efficient equipment.

The group's objective is to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030.

Through innovation, the company wants to remain a leader in transformation of glass processes, products and relationships with its environment to give life to a sustainable future.

This set of projects serves this objective, by making it possible to eliminate 100% of the site's heavy fuel oil consumption, to cover almost 10% of the site's electricity needs, and to reduce its GHG emissions by 6,530 tonnes of CO2e per year.

International Cookware’s Sequoia’s project involves the efficient reconstruction of a melting furnace at its glassworks.

The company produces more than 40,000 tonnes / year of Borosilicate glass under the Pyrex brand.

The industrial glassmaker intends to replace a melting furnace. The 2022 investments are focused on the further improvement of its energy efficiency and the pursuit of its electrification.

This operation makes it possible to increase the electrification rate of the gas-oxygen / electricity combi oven from 49% to 54%.

It saves 3,800 MWh of EP per year, or 1,100 tonnes of CO2e per year.

This project is part of its decarbonation strategy, initiated in 1998, aiming for a mix of 80% electricity / 20% hydrogen.
