The company said it was in response to the weak macro-economic environment, with low metal prices and uncertain market outlook. In addition, Kurri Kurri is suffering from a strong Australian dollar relative to the US dollar.

The plant began operations in 1969 and was acquitted by Hydro in 2002 when it bought VAW Aluminium AG.

It has three production lines with a total production capacity of 180kt/y. It is based near Newcastle in New South Wales and employs 500 people.
