Carbone Savoie is a supplier to the aluminium industry. At three sites it produces 45kt/y of cathode block materials.

It ordered a fume treatment plant from Lufttechnik Bayreuth, Germany (LTB) in order to improve health and safety conditions.

The solution was developed together with the customer, by using LTB pilot test plants.

The aim was the treatment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions. Four baking furnaces were connected in a ductwork system, which leads the fume gases to the central treatment plant.

With a capacity of more than 100000m³/h it will be one of the biggest installations in the industry. The fumes contain aerosols, particulate matter, volatile organic compounds (VOC) and condensable hydrocarbons.

With the new plant type the emissions could be reduced significantly compared to old systems with electrostatic precipitators or alumina injection filters.

The fume treatment system consists of a pre-treatment stage and a regenerative thermal oxidiser type Roxitherm RTO. To ensure an uninterrupted treatment the systems has three RTO in parallel.

The plant is manufactured in Germany and will be ready for use at the end of 2012. LTB is a supplier of air pollution control equipment to the aluminium industry.
