The new trains will be made of an aluminium light alloy in order to reduce energy consumption and will allow the multiple traction use to increase the passenger transport capacity in rush hour.

The two railway companies, Sistemi Territoriali and Ferrovie Emilia Romagna, jointly launched a call for tenders in January 2009 for the supply of 34 trains for regional transport, with the option of an additional supply for another 22 trains. The tender has been won by the temporary merge of the Stadler and AnsaldoBreda companies

The maximum working speed will reach 160km/h for the Flirt electrotrains and 140km/h for the GTW electric-diesel trains.
