Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) the world's fourth largest aluminium smelter, has announced a new production record of 890kt for 2012, up from 881kt the previous year.

The company cites operational improvements, a dedicated workforce and teamwork as the reasons behind the smelter's success.
Tim Murray, Alba’s CEO, said the company achieved the record figure without any 'significant additional capital expenditure'.

Last month, Alba contracted Canada-based Bechtel to conduct a feasibility study into a proposed $2.5bn expansion plan that will see the addition of a sixth production line.

The new line will add a further 400kt per annum to the current 881kt/yr and will be completed early 2015.
